In 1965, the New Farmers of America (NFA) and the Future Farmers of America (now the National FFA Organization) became one organization. While labeled a merger, NFA was basically absorbed by FFA.
With that contagious spirit came the inspiration to combine the New Farmers of America — the vocational agriculture organization for African American students — and FFA. Eight years later, in 1973, Frederick McClure from Texas became the organization's first African American national officer.
By 1935, FFA membership had topped 100,000 with more than 3,900 chapters in 47 states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. That same year, the New Farmers of America was established to provide leadership opportunities to African-American students enrolled in vocational education classes.
